A Green Christmas @ Brown Library

A "Green" Christmas @ Brown Library

Thanks to the Montessori Preschool of Washington, the children's area of Brown Library is celebrating a very "green" holiday season. The youngsters have created a Christmas tree, complete with decorations, from recycled products!

The Christmas tree itself is an impressive stack of painted 2-liter soda and water bottles. Recycled CDs, painted and decorated with feathers, become cheery cardinals sitting on its branches. A bright star, a reindeer, festive snowmen, and holiday wall decorations complete the wintery scene.

Drop by the library and enjoy our "green" Christmas!

They get the tickets to The Quidditch World Cup Final but after the match is over, people dressed like Lord Voldemort's 'Death Eaters' set a fire to all the visitors' tents, coupled with the appearance of Voldemort's symbol, the 'Dark Mark' in the sky, which causes a frenzy across the magical community. That same year, Hogwarts is hosting 'The Triwizard Tournament', a magical tournament between three well-known schools of magic : Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. The contestants have to be above the age of 17, and are chosen by a magical object called Goblet of Fire. On the night of selection, however, the Goblet spews out four names instead of the usual three, with Harry unwittingly being selected as the Fourth Champion. Since the magic cannot be reversed, Harry is forced to go with it and brave three exceedingly difficult tasks." (Soumitra @ imdb.com)

Arriving in a strange and surreal place called "Underland," she finds herself in a world that resembles the nightmares she had as a child, filled with talking animals, villainous queens and knights, and frumious bandersnatches. October Special Program

Something wicked this way comes...

Be sure to keep an eye on the blog in the early days of October. We'll be announcing a special program we'll be hosting all month long. We hope it'll be something patrons of all ages can enjoy, and we're super excited about it.

Double, double, toil and trouble...

September Movie Madness

The Last Song, Friday, September 17th, 2010, at 3:45 p.m.!

We're going to be able to fit in a couple of movies before the special event we're planning to announce in October. First up is the family-friendly "The Last Song", based on the book of the same title by Nicholas Sparks.

"Seventeen-year-old Veronica 'Ronnie' Miller's life was turned upside-down when her parents divorced and her father moved from New York City to Tybee Island, Georgia. Three years later, she remains angry and alienated from her parents, especially her father ...until her mother decides it would be in everyone's best interest if she spent the summer on Tybee Island with him. Ronnie's father, a former concert pianist and teacher, is living a quiet life in the beach town, immersed in creating a work of art that will become the centerpiece of a local church. The tale that unfolds is an unforgettable story about love in its myriad forms - first love, the love between parents and children - that demonstrates, as only a Nicholas Sparks novel can, the many ways that deeply felt relationships can break our hearts ...and heal them. "

There is no sign-up to attend this movie, but we do encourage you to show up at least fifteen minutes early to guarantee yourself a seat, since we have limited seating. This film is rated PG for thematic material, some violence, sensuality and mild language.

"This story follows a teenage rock hopper penguin named Cody Maverick from his hometown of Shiverpool, Antarctica, where all of the other penguins think he's nothing but a surfing fool, to the "Big Z Memorial Surf Off" on Pen Gu Island. Young Cody is determined to win the most important competition in the world of penguin surfing in honor of "Big Z," a deceased surfing legend whom he has idolized since childhood. But the waves in Pen Gu are different than in Shiverpool, and the competition is steep. The current champ, egotistical Tank Evans, isn't just about to let this little penguin knock him from first place without a fight. When Cody wipes out and encounters Geek, a recluse aging former surfer, living in the jungle, he learns some important lessons about life and surfing, and even teaches Geek a thing or two."

Summer Reading Program Event: Wendal Wandell

Summer Reading Program: Wendal Wandell, Storyteller, July 16th, at 11 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall!

Every event has been fantastic so far this summer, and we're hoping to keep the train rolling with Wendal Wandell. On July 16th, at 11 a.m., in the Fellowship Hall at the First United Methodist Church, Mr. Wandell, storyteller extraordinaire, will perform his program "Make a Splash in the Past".

"Author, teacher, and theatrical performer Thomas J. Shimeld, as Wendal Wandell, takes your children back in time to share the history of the Southeast. Using children's literature along with period games, magic, music, and costumes, children learn about the impact individuals have had on history such as George Washington, Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, Davy Crockett, the Wright Brothers, Jimmy Carter, Martin Luther King, and Pearl S. Buck. Their inspirational stories get children to consider how they, too, can make a splash in history."
