Valentine's Day Party!
Bookshelf News 02
Online Teen Author Network from HarperCollins.
This week, HarperTeen (a division of the HarperCollins publishing company) officially launched their new website, http://www.inkpop.com/. The site's goal is to connect rising stars of teen literature with potential publishers and readers through online community publishing. Since it's beta launch last year, inkpop has drawn in over 10,000 members and nearly 11,000 submissions, varying from novels, poems, short stories, and even essays. The members are ages 13 and up, and come from 109 countries around the world. The most valuble assest of the site is the international group of HarperCollins editors that review the site's top five monthly selections, and provide critique and feedback to the young authors, all the while considering their works for publication. What young author doesn't dream of getting published by a huge company like HarperCollins?
For more information, and maybe to even make an account yourself, visit http://www.inkpop.com/.

Poe's Mysterious Birthday
Every year on the anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe's birth on January 19th, a mysterious visitor cloaked all in black has left roses and a half-empty bottle of top-notch cognac on his grave in Baltimore, Maryland. This year, for the first time in six decades, the nightly visitor failed to show. His identity unknown for years, his strange absence this year has even furthered the intrigue. The annual tribute reportedly began in 1949 - and in 1993 he began leaving notes, starting with one that stated: "The torch will be passed." Another note in 1998 indicated the the orginator of the tradition had passed on, and that his sons were to take over. Have the sons disregarded their father's wishes, or did something ghastly happen to the nightly wanderer? For the full story, head over to http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100119/ap_en_ot/us_poe_mystery_visitor. (image from http://www.sanctaflor.files.wordpress.com)

YA Board Meeting 01
Brown Library is going to be getting a little help on the teenage front. Local students have banded together to form their very own advisory board - designed to encourage and draw in more teenagers to reading (and all the other fun stuff we have at the library!). The next meeting for the board will be January 26th, at 3 p.m., at the P.S. Jones Media Center. After each meeting, we'll be posting a few highlights and notes right here on our blog. We really hope the start of this new board will encourage teens (and tweens!) of the area to frequent the library much more often.

January Movie Madness 02
G-Force, Friday, January 22nd!
The second movie of January Movie Madness is here - and this time it's for the kids (though parents are, of course, welcome!). "Buckle up for thrilling edge-of-your-seat action and laugh-out-loud fun in Disney’s family comedy adventure G-Force. Just as the G-Force — an elite team of highly trained guinea pigs — is about to save the world, the F.B.I. shuts the secret unit down. But these next-generation action heroes — Darwin, loyal team leader; Blaster, weapons expert with attitude to spare; Juarez, drop-dead gorgeous martial arts diva; and tag-along Hurley — won’t be stopped. Armed with the latest in high-tech spy equipment, and with the F.B.I. on their tails, the fur flies as they race against the clock to save the world. From the producer of the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy and National Treasure, and filled with high-octane action, daredevil stunts, cutting-edge special effects and outrageous comedy, G-Force is fantastic fun for the whole family." (From Amazon.com)
We will be showing the movie on Friday, January 22nd from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm. It will be shown, as usual, in our upstairs meeting room, so if you're unsure of where to go, just ask at the front desk for directions. Please try to arrive at least 15 minutes early, as our seating is limited. This film is rated PG.

January Movie Madness
Brown Library is pleased to announce that we will now be showing at least two movies every month, free of charge, for our patrons! Our kick-off event will be the heart-warming Julie & Julia! Julie & Julia is a 2009 comedy-drama film written and directed by Nora Ephron. The film depicts events in the life of chef Julia Child in the early years in her culinary career, contrasting her life with Julie Powell, who aspires to cook all 524 recipes from Child's cookbook during a single year, a challenge she described on her popular blog that would make her a published author.
We will be showing the movie on Saturday, January 9th from 12:30 to 2:35 p.m. There will be coffee, tea, and a few nibbles for attendees. The movie will be shown in our upstairs meeting room, so if you're unsure where to go, ask one of our lovely librarians at the front desk where to go. Please try to arrive 15 minutes early at least, as seating is limited! This film is rated PG-13.
See you on Saturday!
Welcome!
Today George H. and Laura E. Brown Library is hopping on the technology bandwagon by starting our very own blog! You will be able to find everything going on at the library through the new blog, including days we'll be closed, special events, and even new releases. We all are incredibly excited about being able to reach out to our patrons in this new way, and we hope this will be only one of many technology-based resources we will have for the library. To all our patrons (and non-patrons too!), happy blogging!
